You know this job

“Sod all room to get in.” The top 15 mm nut.

Two bottom bolts come off in a minute. Then the stud at the top, behind the fuel cooler and every pipe Solihull could route over it. A UJ reaches it, but a UJ won't hold the socket square: the moment you lean on the ratchet it folds, skips, and starts rounding the nut.

So it turns into a two-person job, one underneath with the ratchet, one leaning over the engine guiding the socket. Or an hour-long fight on your own. Owners on LandyZone and defender2 have given the thing a name.

Td5 owners tell us

Is this your Saturday?

  • The UJ folds as soon as you put any force on it
  • “Using the socket to locate the nut was a fool's errand”
  • An hour under the truck for one nut you can't see
  • Asking someone to go underneath while you guide it
  • A rounded 15 mm nut and a solenoid you still haven't reached

✕ If nothing changes

  • Same fight on the next starter, the next solenoid, the next D3 alternator bolt
  • A rounded nut that now needs a deep 6-point socket and a hammer
  • Or £240–£420 at the garage for a job you can do

✓ With the FlatReach

  • Socket square on the nut, from above or below
  • Ratchet 39 cm away, full swings
  • No second pair of hands
  • New starter on and torqued the same afternoon

The nut doesn't get easier. The free magnetic pick-up ends when the countdown hits zero.

Sound familiar?

I used to thinkIt's just an awkward nut. A UJ, a long extension and enough swearing will get it.
I triedA wobble bar. A deep 6-point socket. A flexi-head ratchet. A mate underneath with a torch in his teeth.
Now I knowThe problem was never reach, it was the angle. Anything with a joint in it folds under load. A rigid flat bar keeps the socket square and moves the ratchet to where there's room.
How it works

Socket where the nut is. Ratchet where the room is.

FlatReach bar fed into the gap under the intake manifold

1. Click your 15 mm socket onto the end

Your own 3/8" socket. The spring ball holds it, so it doesn't fall off down the gap.

2. Feed the flat bar down to the nut

16 mm thin, so it goes past the fuel cooler from above, or up past the chassis rail from below. The bar is rigid: the socket stays square.

3. Ratchet on the top end. Swing.

The chain inside turns the socket 1:1 with the ratchet, 39 cm away. Full swings in open air, not one click at a time.

What Amazon buyers complained about on the cheap ones, and what's different here

“The socket fell off the adapter”

The most common 1-star review on the cheap ones. Here the main drive and every adapter have a spring ball detent, so your socket clicks on and stays on, even pointing straight down into the bellhousing. And the free magnetic pick-up is in the box for the day one does drop.

“The adapters were missing”

All four come in a small zip pouch, checked before dispatch: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" square drives and a 1/4" bit holder. Anything missing, email us and we send it the same day.

“Lost half the torque / the chain's got slop”

Every chain drive has a little play before it bites; that's normal and it doesn't cost you torque once it's loaded. Ours is rated to 72 Nm, which is more than the Td5 starter nut needs. We don't claim impact-gun numbers, because that's how the cheap ones get broken.

“Too thick to fit”

16 mm from end to end with no bulge at the drives. If a 15 mm socket and a thin extension fit the gap, this fits. If it doesn't fit your engine, send it back within 90 days.

FlatReach drive end with socket fitted, close up
72 NmThe honest torque rating. It's plenty to spin the top nut off and run the new one on to spec. If a nut is seized solid, crack it first with your breaker bar from underneath, then let the FlatReach do the fiddly part.

You might be thinking…

“A UJ on a short socket does it, I've done it before.”

You can. Owners describe the same job as “an hour-long fight”, “a fool's errand” and “a bugger of a job”. The UJ reaches, it just won't hold the socket square once you lean on it. This is the version without the fold.

“Will it take the torque?”

Rated to 72 Nm, which covers spinning the nut off and running it back on to spec. If it's seized, crack it first with a breaker bar, that's true of any extension.

“Chain-drive tools are flimsy.”

The chain is enclosed in a steel bar and the end housings are on screws, not rivets, so it can be opened and greased. It isn't for impact guns, and it's covered by a 12-month replacement warranty.

“Do I need special sockets?”

No. It takes the 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" sockets and 1/4" bits you already own, 6-point or 12-point, standard or deep.

“Will it fit my engine? I've got a Puma / a Disco 2.”

The bar is 16 mm thick and 39 cm long, so it goes where a 15 mm socket and a thin extension go. Engine bays vary and we haven't crawled under every one, which is why you get 90 days to try it on your own truck with a full refund if it doesn't reach.

“Why buy this from a shop I've never heard of?”

Because the risk sits with us: 90 days to try it on the real job with a full refund, a 12-month warranty, tracked delivery with a link by email, Shopify secure checkout, a UK return address in Leicester and a real person at contact@rovalune.com who answers within a working day.

What Land Rover owners say

No surprises

What it does, and what it doesn't

What it does

  • Puts your socket square on a nut you can reach but can't swing a ratchet at, and moves the ratchet 39 cm away to where there is room.
  • Turns the socket 1:1 with the ratchet through a sealed chain, in both directions, from either end.
  • Takes the 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" sockets and 1/4" hex bits you already own, through the adapters in the box.
  • Goes where a UJ folds: one rigid bar, so what you put in at the ratchet arrives at the Td5 top nut, square.

What it doesn't do

  • It won't crack a seized fastener. Rated to 72 Nm (53 ft-lb). Break a stuck nut loose with your breaker bar first, then let this spin it off and run the new one on.
  • It isn't for impact guns. Hand ratchet or a low-torque cordless ratchet only.
  • The 1/4" adapter is for light fasteners and bits. Use 3/8" or 1/2" for anything you lean on.
  • It doesn't make the nut visible. You still feel for it. It just means you only have to find it once.
  • We have not tested every engine bay. If it doesn't reach your nut, the 90-day refund covers it.
Before you buy any extension

Why the usual fixes end up back in the drawer

The UJ folds. A universal joint gives you angle and takes away torque. The moment you lean on the ratchet the socket tips, skips and starts rounding the corners. Owners' words: "wibbly-wobblies make it impossible to apply enough torque".

The wobble bar is the same joint, shorter. Less fold, still fold, and now half the reach.

The long straight extension can't line up.Every pipe and wire Solihull could route over the starter sits between you and the stud, so the bar comes in at an angle and the socket won't seat.

The branded flat extension needs its own sockets. The £80–£125 professional type uses a proprietary drive. This one takes the three square drives and the 1/4" bits you already have, and costs £24.95.

The spanner from below works one flat at a time. "1/8th of a turn", blind, for hours. The whole point of this is to put the ratchet in the open where a full swing is possible.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What's in the box?
The FlatReach extension (39 cm long, 16 mm thick, 3/8" drive), a zip pouch with the 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" square-drive adapters and a 1/4" hex bit holder, and the free telescopic magnetic pick-up while launch gift stock lasts.
Which socket does the Td5 top nut take?
Usually 15 mm; some have been replaced with 16 or 17 mm. A 6-point 3/8" drive socket is what owners recommend, and that's what goes on the 3/8" adapter.
Can I use it with an impact gun?
No. Hand ratchet or a low-torque cordless ratchet only. Impact use is outside the rating and the warranty.
What else on the Land Rover is it for?
Owners name the same awkward fasteners again and again: D3 / TDV6 lower alternator bolts, D3 / D4 turbo bolts from underneath, chassis and towbar bolts, P38 propshaft flanges. Anywhere the socket fits but the ratchet can't swing.
